01गट्ठर गट्ठर
France · a word for a bundlegaṭṭhar
A little bundle.
The French called it a trousseau — from trousse, a parcel of lace, linens and keepsakes packed for a new house. The word is theirs. The gesture is much older.
एक गट्ठर। कपड़े, आशीर्वाद, और एक नई शुरुआत।
02स्त्रीधन स्त्रीधन
India · older than the wordstrī-dhan
Her wealth. Not a payment.
Long before that French word reached Indian English, there was स्त्रीधन — gold, silk and gifts given to the bride, hers in law and in love. We pack her things. We do not pack a demand.

03थाल थाल
North India · the unit of blessingthāl
It has to be carried in.
In Punjab and Delhi, a gift is unfinished until it can be lifted on a थाल. A folded saree, nariyal, dry fruit, gota — blessings made visible, then handed across a room.
आशीर्वाद तब पूरा होता है जब वह थाल पर सजे।
04कलिरे कलिरे
Punjab · for the roadkalire
Dry fruit for the journey.
Kalire once held almonds, makhana and dried coconut, tied to the chooda so a bride would not go hungry on the way to a new village. The road became a banquet hall. The hanging gold stayed.
रास्ते के लिए सूखा मेवा। अब रास्ता एक मंडप है।
05शगुन शगुन
Gurugram · todayshagun
Same gesture. New room.
Today the bundle is a saree tray, a milni suit, a shagun thaal. The photograph is the new village road. We still pack her things so she leaves looked after.
